French toast sticks are the perfect shape for little hands. Baking them on a tray means no standing at the stove, and a big batch freezes well. Serve with a yogurt and berry dip instead of syrup.

Instructions

  1. Step 1: A parchment-lined baking tray being brushed with melted butter on a pastel kitchen counter

    1Heat the oven

Heat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a tray with parchment and brush it with melted butter.

  2. Step 2: Slices of whole-wheat bread being cut into finger-width sticks on a wooden cutting board

    2Cut the bread

Cut each slice into 3–4 sticks about 3/4 inch (2 cm) wide.

  3. Step 3: Eggs, milk and cinnamon being whisked together in a shallow glass dish

    3Whisk the egg mix

Whisk the eggs, milk, cinnamon and vanilla in a shallow dish.

  1. Step 4: A bread stick being dipped into a cinnamon egg mixture and placed on a parchment-lined tray with other dipped sticks

    4Dip the sticks

Dip each stick for 2–3 seconds per side, let the extra drip off, and lay it on the tray.

  2. Step 5: Golden baked French toast sticks on a parchment-lined tray being flipped with a spatula

    5Bake and flip

Bake for 12–15 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden with no wet egg left in the center.

  3. Step 6: Golden French toast sticks on a pastel yellow toddler plate with a small bowl of pink raspberry swirl yogurt for dipping

    6Serve with dip

Cool for a few minutes and serve with plain yogurt swirled with mashed raspberries for dipping.

How to serve by age

9–12 months

Serve whole sticks for baby to hold and gnaw, once egg, dairy and wheat have been introduced.

12–24 months

Serve 2–3 sticks with a yogurt dip, or cut into bite-size pieces.

2–3 years

Serve whole sticks with dip. Toddlers love helping dip the bread in the egg.

Allergy & diet swaps

Gluten-free
Use a gluten-free sandwich bread.
Dairy-free
Use unsweetened soy or oat milk, oil for the tray, and a dairy-free yogurt for dipping.
Egg-free
Whisk 1/2 mashed ripe banana with the milk and cinnamon and use that as the dip. The sticks will be softer.

Tips

  • Day-old bread soaks up the egg without falling apart.
  • Freeze cooled sticks on a tray, then bag them. Reheat in a toaster or a 350°F (175°C) oven for 5 minutes.
  • Skip the syrup. Mashed berries or a little yogurt add sweetness without added sugar.

Storage: Fridge: 3 days. Freezer: 2 months.

Suggested age: 9 months+. Every child is different — serve textures and sizes that match your toddler's chewing skills.

Questions parents ask

Can babies eat French toast?

Yes, from about 9 months once egg, dairy and wheat have been introduced. Sticks are an easy shape for baby-led weaning.

How do I know French toast is cooked through?

There should be no wet egg left in the center. The sticks should feel springy and look golden on both sides.

Can I freeze French toast sticks?

Yes. Freeze cooled sticks on a tray, then store in a freezer bag for up to 2 months. Reheat in a toaster or oven.

What can I serve instead of syrup?

Plain yogurt swirled with mashed raspberries or strawberries makes a sweet dip with no added sugar.
