Easy toddler lunch ideas for home and daycare

Lunch works well as a small bento-style plate: one protein, one grain, one or two fruits or vegetables, and one food your toddler already likes.

For daycare, choose foods that taste good cold or at room temperature and pack them in an insulated lunchbox with an ice pack. Foods with cheese, meat, eggs or yogurt shouldn't sit out for more than 2 hours.

Leftovers count. Last night's dinner, cut to a toddler-safe size, is often the easiest lunch of all.

Quick ideas, no recipe needed

  • Hummus, soft pita triangles and steamed carrot sticks
  • Small cheese cubes, whole-grain crackers and quartered grapes
  • Leftover pasta with peas
  • Mashed bean and cheese quesadilla strips
  • Quartered hard-boiled egg, avocado and toast fingers

Tips for toddler lunch

  • Use an insulated lunchbox with an ice pack for daycare lunches that include dairy or meat.
  • Serve one 'safe' food your toddler already likes alongside something new.
  • Fun shapes — triangles, spirals and stars — make new foods more inviting.
