Contains: milk, wheat.

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Black beans being mashed with a fork in a small pastel bowl

    1Mash the beans

Mash the black beans with a fork and stir in the cumin.

  2. Step 2: Grated zucchini being squeezed in a clean kitchen towel over a cutting board

    2Prep the zucchini

Grate the zucchini, then squeeze out the extra moisture in a clean towel.

  3. Step 3: A whole wheat tortilla spread with mashed black beans, topped with grated zucchini, sweet corn and shredded cheese

    3Build the quesadilla

Spread the beans over one tortilla. Scatter with zucchini, corn and cheese, then top with the second tortilla.

  1. Step 4: A quesadilla cooking in a skillet, edge lifted with a spatula showing a golden underside

    4Cook the first side

Cook in a dry skillet over medium heat for 2โ€“3 minutes until golden underneath.

  2. Step 5: A golden crispy quesadilla being flipped in a pan with a wide spatula, cheese oozing at the edges

    5Flip and melt

Carefully flip and cook another 2โ€“3 minutes until the cheese is fully melted.

  3. Step 6: Veggie quesadilla triangles on a mint green toddler plate with mashed avocado dip and halved cherry tomatoes cut into quarters

    6Cut into triangles

Rest for 2 minutes, then cut into small triangles or strips. Serve with avocado or mild salsa.

How to serve by age

9โ€“12 months

Best saved for after 12 months, since crispy tortilla edges are hard for new eaters. If your baby handles soft breads well, offer a thin strip from the soft center, made with a lower-sodium cheese.

12โ€“24 months

Cut into thin strips or small triangles and trim the crispiest edges. Let it cool fully, since melted cheese stays hot.

2โ€“3 years

Serve triangles with mashed avocado or mild salsa for dipping.

Allergy & diet swaps

Dairy-free
Use a dairy-free cheese shred, or skip the cheese and add an extra spoon of mashed beans to hold it together.
Gluten-free
Use soft corn tortillas or a gluten-free wrap, warmed first so they don't crack.
Different veggies
Swap in finely chopped spinach, roasted red pepper or mashed sweet potato.

Tips

  • Let it cool for a few minutes โ€” melted cheese gets very hot.
  • Use cookie cutters for stars or hearts on special days.
  • Any leftover veggies work: spinach, peppers, sweet potato or mushrooms.

Storage & safety

Storage: Fridge: 2 days. Reheat in a dry skillet to re-crisp. Great cold in lunchboxes.

Suggested age: 12 months+. Every child is different โ€” serve textures and sizes that match your toddler's chewing skills.

Always seat your toddler upright and stay close while they eat. Cut round foods into small pieces and spread nut butters thinly. Read our toddler food safety guide for more.

Questions parents ask

Are quesadillas healthy for toddlers?

Yes, when they're filled with beans and vegetables. This version adds fiber and protein from black beans and uses a modest amount of cheese.

Can I pack quesadillas for daycare?

Yes. They taste good at room temperature. Pack them with an ice pack, since they contain cheese, and serve within the day.

Are canned beans OK for toddlers?

Yes. Choose low-sodium or no-salt-added beans and rinse them well, which removes a good share of the remaining sodium.

How do I reheat a quesadilla?

Warm it in a dry skillet over medium heat for 1โ€“2 minutes per side so it crisps again. The microwave makes it soft.
