Contains: milk, wheat.

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Pizza dough being rolled into a rectangle with a rolling pin on a floured pastel countertop

    1Roll out the dough

Heat the oven to 400ยฐF (200ยฐC). Roll the dough on a floured surface into a 10 x 14 inch rectangle.

  2. Step 2: A thin layer of red tomato sauce being spread over a rectangle of pizza dough with the back of a spoon

    2Spread the sauce

Spread a thin layer of tomato sauce over the dough, leaving a small border, and sprinkle with oregano.

  3. Step 3: Chopped spinach and shredded mozzarella scattered over tomato sauce on rolled out pizza dough

    3Add spinach and cheese

Scatter the chopped spinach and mozzarella evenly over the sauce.

  1. Step 4: Adult hands rolling pizza dough topped with cheese and spinach into a tight log

    4Roll it up

Starting at the long side, roll the dough up tightly into a log and pinch the seam closed.

  2. Step 5: Pizza pinwheel slices arranged on a parchment lined baking sheet, golden and bubbly just out of the oven

    5Slice and bake

Slice into 12 rounds, place on a lined baking sheet and bake 13โ€“15 minutes until golden.

  3. Step 6: Golden cheesy pizza pinwheels on a colorful toddler plate with a small bowl of tomato sauce for dipping and cucumber sticks

    6Cool and serve

Cool 5 minutes and serve with extra sauce for dipping. Cut into quarters for younger toddlers.

How to serve by age

9โ€“12 months

Best saved for after 12 months, since pizza dough is chewy. If your baby already handles soft breads well, offer a thin strip from the soft center and stay close.

12โ€“24 months

Cut each pinwheel into quarters. Trim off the firmer outer crust for new chewers.

2โ€“3 years

Serve whole. Toddlers this age love helping sprinkle the cheese and roll up the log.

Allergy & diet swaps

Dairy-free
Use a dairy-free mozzarella-style shred, or skip the cheese and spread a thin layer of hummus under the sauce.
Gluten-free
Use gluten-free pizza dough. Roll it between sheets of parchment because it tears easily, and chill the log for 15 minutes before slicing.
More veggies
Add finely diced bell pepper, mushrooms or grated zucchini squeezed dry.

Tips

  • Store-bought pizza dough makes this a 30-minute recipe.
  • Add finely diced bell pepper or mushrooms for more veggies.
  • Freeze baked pinwheels and reheat in the oven for 5 minutes.

Storage & safety

Storage: Fridge: 3 days. Freezer: 2 months.

Suggested age: 12 months+. Every child is different โ€” serve textures and sizes that match your toddler's chewing skills.

Always seat your toddler upright and stay close while they eat. Cut round foods into small pieces and spread nut butters thinly. Read our toddler food safety guide for more.

Questions parents ask

Can toddlers eat pizza?

Yes, from about 12 months, cut into small pieces. Keep sodium down with no-salt-added tomato sauce and a moderate amount of cheese, as this recipe does.

Can I make pizza pinwheels ahead?

Yes. Bake, cool and refrigerate them for up to 3 days, or freeze for up to 2 months. Reheat at 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) for 5โ€“8 minutes.

Are pizza pinwheels good for a daycare lunch?

Yes. They taste good at room temperature. Pack them with an ice pack because they contain cheese.

Why did my pinwheels unroll in the oven?

The dough was too warm or the log was rolled loosely. Roll it tightly, pinch the seam closed, place the slices seam-side down and cut with a sharp serrated knife.
