Contains: egg, milk, wheat.

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Bright orange cooked sweet potato being mashed with a potato masher in a pastel mint bowl

    1Mash the sweet potato

Mash cooked sweet potato until completely smooth (microwave a whole pierced sweet potato for 6โ€“8 minutes if starting from raw).

  2. Step 2: A whisk mixing orange sweet potato with eggs and milk in a large white mixing bowl

    2Whisk wet ingredients

Whisk the sweet potato, eggs, milk, melted butter and vanilla until smooth.

  3. Step 3: Flour and cinnamon being folded into thick orange sweet potato batter with a rubber spatula

    3Add dry ingredients

Stir in flour, baking powder and cinnamon until just combined โ€” a few lumps are fine.

  1. Step 4: An open preheated waffle iron being brushed lightly with oil on a pastel kitchen counter

    4Preheat the waffle iron

Preheat and lightly grease your waffle iron.

  2. Step 5: An open waffle iron with a golden orange sweet potato waffle just finished cooking, steam rising

    5Cook until crisp

Spoon batter into the iron and cook according to the manufacturer's directions until golden and crisp, about 4โ€“5 minutes.

  3. Step 6: Sweet potato waffle sticks on a pastel pink toddler plate with a small bowl of plain yogurt for dipping and sliced banana

    6Cut into sticks

Cool slightly, cut into finger-size strips and serve with plain yogurt for dipping.

How to serve by age

9โ€“12 months

Cut the waffle into finger-length strips your baby can hold, and serve them soft rather than extra-crispy. Serve plain, with no syrup.

12โ€“24 months

Serve strips or small squares with plain yogurt for dipping and soft fruit on the side.

2โ€“3 years

Serve a whole waffle cut into quarters, with a thin spread of nut or seed butter for extra protein.

Allergy & diet swaps

Egg-free
Replace each egg with a flax egg (1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water) and add 2 extra tbsp of milk. Cook a minute longer so they crisp.
Dairy-free
Use unsweetened plant milk and oil instead of butter.
Gluten-free
Use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend in place of the wheat flour.

Tips

  • Canned sweet potato or pumpkin purรฉe works perfectly too.
  • Make a double batch and freeze โ€” they re-crisp beautifully in the toaster.
  • Serve with a thin smear of nut butter for extra protein (only if nuts have already been introduced).

Storage & safety

Storage: Fridge: 3 days. Freezer: up to 3 months, separated by parchment.

Suggested age: 9 months+. Every child is different โ€” serve textures and sizes that match your toddler's chewing skills.

Always seat your toddler upright and stay close while they eat. Cut round foods into small pieces and spread nut butters thinly. Read our toddler food safety guide for more.

Questions parents ask

Can babies eat sweet potato waffles?

Yes, from about 9 months, cut into strips once egg, milk and wheat have been introduced. Sweet potato adds natural sweetness, so there's no need for syrup.

Can I make the waffles without a waffle iron?

Yes. Cook the batter as small pancakes in a lightly oiled pan over medium-low heat, about 2โ€“3 minutes per side.

How do I reheat frozen waffles?

Pop them straight from the freezer into the toaster, or warm them in the oven at 350ยฐF (175ยฐC) for 8โ€“10 minutes so they crisp again.

Can I use canned sweet potato or pumpkin?

Yes. Use 1 cup of plain canned purรฉe, not pie filling, which has added sugar and spices.
