2–3 years

Serve in a bowl with a toddler spoon or training chopsticks. Add diced chicken or tofu for extra protein.

Allergy & diet swaps

Gluten-free
Regular soy sauce contains wheat. Use tamari labeled gluten-free instead.
Egg-free
Leave out the egg and add diced firm tofu or shelled edamame.
Soy-free
Use coconut aminos instead of soy sauce, and skip tofu or edamame.

Tips

  • Day-old rice fries best; fresh rice can turn mushy.
  • Add diced cooked chicken or tofu for extra protein.

Questions parents ask

Why use day-old rice for fried rice?

Chilled, day-old rice is drier, so it fries into separate grains instead of turning mushy.

How do I store leftover rice safely?

Cool cooked rice quickly and refrigerate it within 1 hour. Eat it within a day, and reheat it only once, until steaming hot.

Is soy sauce OK for toddlers?

A little is fine from 12 months. This recipe uses just 1 tsp of low-sodium soy sauce for the whole batch. Leave it out for babies under 1.

Can I freeze fried rice?

Yes, for up to 1 month. Reheat it until it's steaming hot all the way through.
