Instructions

  1. Step 1: Orange sweet potato cubes being tossed with olive oil, cumin and paprika on a parchment-lined tray

    1Season the sweet potato

Heat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Toss the sweet potato cubes with the olive oil, cumin and paprika on a parchment-lined tray.

  2. Step 2: Roasted sweet potato cubes on a parchment-lined tray, one being squashed with a fork to show it is soft

    2Roast until soft

Roast for 20–25 minutes, turning once, until the cubes squash easily when pressed with a fork.

  3. Step 3: Black beans in a small saucepan being lightly mashed with a fork

    3Warm and mash the beans

Warm the black beans in a small pan with 2 tbsp water for 3–4 minutes, then lightly mash about half of them.

  1. Step 4: Diced green avocado on a small cutting board next to a little bowl of white yogurt and a lime wedge

    4Prep the toppings

Dice the avocado and stir a squeeze of lime into the yogurt.

  2. Step 5: Small pastel bowls being filled with white rice, roasted sweet potato cubes, mashed black beans, diced avocado and shredded cheddar

    5Build the bowls

Spoon rice into small bowls and top with sweet potato, beans, avocado and cheese.

  3. Step 6: A colorful toddler bowl with rice, roasted sweet potato cubes, mashed black beans, diced avocado, shredded cheddar and a dollop of yogurt, with a toddler spoon on a pastel table

    6Serve

Add a spoonful of lime yogurt. Set aside your toddler's bowl before adding salsa, salt or hot sauce for the adults.

How to serve by age

9–12 months

Mash the sweet potato, beans and avocado together and serve with soft rice on a spoon. Skip the lime yogurt if dairy isn't introduced yet.

12–24 months

Serve the pieces separately so your toddler can pick them up. Lightly mash the beans to flatten them.

2–3 years

Let your toddler build their own bowl from small dishes of each topping.

Allergy & diet swaps

🌾 Gluten-free: Gluten-free as written. Use single ground spices (not a seasoning mix) and plain yogurt, and check the labels on your beans and cheese.

Dairy-free
Skip the cheese and use a plain unsweetened coconut yogurt.
Extra protein
Add shredded cooked chicken or ground turkey cooked to 165°F (74°C).
No rice
Serve over mashed potato or quinoa instead.

Tips

  • Beans with a vitamin C food such as lime or bell pepper help the body absorb their iron.
  • Add shredded cooked chicken for extra protein.
  • Use single ground spices rather than a taco seasoning mix, which is often salty and may contain wheat.

Storage & safety

Storage: Fridge: 3 days, with the avocado kept separate. Reheat the sweet potato, beans and rice until hot.

Suggested age: 9 months+. Every child is different — serve textures and sizes that match your toddler's chewing skills.

Always seat your toddler upright and stay close while they eat. Cut round foods into small pieces and spread nut butters thinly. Read our toddler food safety guide for more.

Questions parents ask

Are these taco bowls gluten-free?

Yes, as written. Rice, beans, sweet potato and avocado are naturally gluten-free. Use single spices rather than a taco seasoning mix, and check your labels.

Can toddlers eat black beans?

Yes. Black beans are a good source of iron, protein and fiber. Lightly mash them for younger toddlers so they're easy to chew.

Is cumin too spicy for toddlers?

No. Cumin and mild smoked paprika add flavor without heat. Leave out chili and hot sauce until after you set aside your toddler's portion.

Can I make these bowls ahead?

Yes. Roast the sweet potato and cook the rice up to 3 days ahead. Dice the avocado just before serving.
