How to serve by age

9โ€“12 months

Cut muffins in half or into strips. They're soft enough for new eaters once egg and wheat have been introduced.

12โ€“24 months

Serve whole mini muffins as a snack or with breakfast.

2โ€“3 years

Serve whole with a thin swipe of cream cheese. Let your toddler help stir the batter.

Allergy & diet swaps

Gluten-free
Use a 1:1 gluten-free flour blend in place of the whole wheat flour.
Egg-free
Replace the egg with a flax egg (1 tbsp ground flaxseed + 3 tbsp water, rested 5 minutes).
Dairy-free
Use coconut oil instead of butter and skip the cream cheese topping.

Tips

  • Squeeze the grated carrot lightly if it's very wet.
  • Add 2 tbsp of hemp hearts or ground flax for an extra nutrition boost.
  • Bake as 12 regular muffins for 18โ€“20 minutes.

Questions parents ask

Do these carrot muffins have added sugar?

No. Ripe banana and unsweetened applesauce do all the sweetening.

Can I freeze carrot muffins?

Yes. Freeze cooled muffins in a bag for up to 3 months and thaw at room temperature or warm for 10โ€“15 seconds.

Why are my muffins dense?

Whole wheat flour makes a slightly heavier muffin. Stir only until the flour disappears, and check that your baking powder is fresh.

Can I make regular-size muffins?

Yes. The batter makes about 12 regular muffins. Bake for 18โ€“20 minutes.
